Bob Marley was the first, and possibly the only, superstar to emerge from the Third World. Although he lived a short life, only 36 years, he penned an enormous quantity of songs, pioneering a new reggae rhythm and sound that was distinctly Jamaican. Born February 6th, 1945 in Jamaica, Bob Marley introduced the power of reggae and the spirituality of the Rastafarian movement to the world. In 1961, he began to focus on music, making a singing group called “The Teenagers” with Bunny and another friend, Peter McIntosh. Bob’s first singles were recorded in 1962. He started his musical career with a band called Wailers, then pursued a solo career which culminated in the release of the album Exodus in 1977 which established his worldwide reputation. Many of his songs protested social injustice while others emphasized religious, specifically Rastafarian, ideals of peace. Bob Marley sold more than 75 million records. Bob Marley died from cancer in a Miami hospital on May 11, 1981.

             C             Bm Em
For the killing of a deputy,
             C         Bm Em
For the life of a deputy.

Sheriff John Brown always hated me,
For what, I don't know:
Every time I plant a seed,
He said kill it before it grow -
He said kill them before they grow.
And so:
Read it in the news:
Em  Am  Em…
I shot the sheriff. Oh, Lord!
But I swear it was in self-defence.
Where was the deputy? (Oo-oo-oh)
I say: I shot the sheriff,
But I swear it was in selfdefence. (Oo-oh) Yeah!
C  Bm  Em…
Freedom came my way one day
And I started out of town, yeah!
All of a sudden I saw sheriff John Brown
Aiming to shoot me down,
So I shot - I shot - I shot him down and I say:
If I am guilty I will pay.

C  Bm  Em…
Reflexes had got the better of me
And what is to be must be:
Every day the bucket a-go a well,
One day the bottom a-go drop out,
One day the bottom a-go drop out.
I say:
Em  Am  Em…
I - I - I - I shot the sheriff.
Lord, I didn't shot the deputy. Yeah!
I - I (shot the sheriff) -
