Dire Straits emerged
during the post-punk era of the late '70s, and while their sound was
minimalistic and stripped down, they owed little to punk. If anything, the band
was a direct outgrowth of the roots revivalism of pub rock, but where pub rock
celebrated good times, Dire Straits were melancholy. Led by guitarist/vocalist
Mark Knopfler, the group built their sound upon the laid-back blues-rock of
J.J. Cale, but they also had jazz and country inflections. As their career
progressed, Dire Straits became more refined and their new maturity happened to
coincide with the rise of MTV and the compact disc. They also became one of the
world's most commercially successful bands, with worldwide album sales of over
120 million. Dire Straits won numerous music awards during their career,
including four Grammy Awards, three Brit Awards—winning Best British Group
twice, and two MTV Video Music Awards. Their career spanned a combined total of
15 years. They originally split up in 1988, but reformed in 1991, and disbanded
for good in 1995 when Mark Knopfler launched his career full-time as a solo
artist. Stay with the Chords for Beginners blog for more! Here is another guitar tab: Hanson chords

How to play chords in "Dire Straits" songs as a beginner?
Mark Knopfler’s guitar work is known for its precision, clean tone, and expressive playing, making it a great study for guitarists looking to improve their skills.
A classic starting point is "Sultans of Swing." While the song is famous for its intricate lead guitar work, the rhythm parts involve straightforward chords like Am, G, F, E and C major chords. Getting these chords right is crucial for capturing the song’s groove. Focus on clean transitions and maintaining a steady rhythm to mirror the song's tight, dynamic feel.
"Brothers in Arms" by Dire Straits is a beautiful, haunting ballad with a simple yet powerful chord progression. The song is played in a slow tempo, making it perfect for both beginners and intermediate players who want to focus on the emotional delivery of their playing. Here are the basic chords used in "Brothers in Arms": Am, F, G, C, Em and Dm chords.
"Romeo and Juliet" is another excellent song to practice. The chord progression is based on simple chords like C, Am, G, F and D minor, but it requires a delicate touch to play effectively. The song’s fingerpicking style also provides a great opportunity to work on accuracy and timing.

C G Am G C...
Come up on different streets, they both were streets of shame
Both dirty, both mean, yes, and the dream was just the same
And I dreamed your dream for you and now your dream is real
How can you look at me as if I was just another one of your deals?
C G Am G C...
When you can fall for chains of silver you can fall for chains of gold
You can fall for pretty strangers and the promises they hold
You promised me everything, you promised me thick and thin, yeah.
Now you just say, "Oh Romeo, yeah. You know, I used to have a scene with him."
C G Am G F...
Juliet, when we made love you used to cry
You said, "I love you like the stars above, I'll love you 'til I die."
There's a place for us, you know the movie song
When you gonna realize it was just that the time was wrong, Juliet?
C G Am G C...
I can't do the talks like they talk on the TV
And I can't do a love song like the way it's meant to be
I can't do everything but I'll do anything for you
I can't do anything except be in love with you
C G Am G C...
And all I do is miss you and the way we used to be
All I do is keep the beat, the bad company
All I do is kiss you through the bars of a rhyme
Julie, I'd do the stars with you any time
